Akhal-Teke Mares

We are extremely proud of our mares. They are the backbone of our breeding program and were selected for their type, movement, conformation, and character. Our herd consists of some of the very best domestically-bred US mares, some of the highest-graded imports ever to enter the US, an Uzbeki import merely one generation removed from great Turkmen bloodlines, and a Russian-born daughter of a #1 ranked World Sire. We believe in crossing our mares to as many different stallions as possible over their breeding careers, so as to continue to promote genetic diversity and the widening of the breed's gene pool. We are also excited to announce that we now have representatives of all three types of Akhal-Teke represented in our mare herd; main, medium, and massive.

Dushka
1986 metallic golden buckskin, Senetir x Dunja, Peren line

Dushka is our senior Teke broodmare, and currently ranked as the #9-graded purebred mare in the US. She is feminine and elegant, with an especially beautiful head and eye, and received a 9.0 grade on her overall conformation from a MAAK judge. She is a gorgeous metallic golden buckskin, with very little mane and forelock as per the breed standard. Dushka has lovely movement, and in her youth earned USDF medals for her amateur rider through Second Level. She has an extremely sweet temperament and is very laid-back in her attitude.

Dushka has not only excellent type, but also a sensational pedigree, she is the only reproducing female descendent of the incomparable Dari, one of the best mares ever to reach the US from Russia, Dari being a daughter of the line sire Gelishikli himself. Dushka's elite-graded sire Senetir was the first Akhal-Teke ever imported into the US, and sired many exceptional athletes as well as passing on his exotic beauty. Senetir was a son of Sektor, and carries one of the last forks of the Peren line not to pass through Polotli, a rarity within the breed. Dushka is a medium type mare. She has had two lovely daughters by Gindarkh and a beautiful bay colt by Mergen, who we sadly lost to complications from a broken leg. She will be bred back to Mergen in 2009.

   Gozakhal
1991 dark bay, Komek x Gulsona, Kir Sakar line

Gozakhal was bred in Uzbekistan and imported from Russia in 2001, her 2000 colt Murgab won a Gold Medal in Movement among young horses at the 2002 A-T World Championships in Moscow. Gozi has true A-T character: proud, noble, and intelligent, with graceful, ground-covering gaits. She is a dark bay; slim, refined, and fine-boned, with a lovely high-set neck carriage.

Gozakhal's pedigree goes straight to Turkmenistan, her elite-graded sire still holds race records there. She is currently the only purebred of her bloodline, Kir Sakar, in the US. The Kir Sakar line is noted especially for it's good broodmares. She continuously gives us lovely foals, with type, elegance, and movement, especially this year’s filly by Maruk, perhaps her best yet. Gozi had an emergency C-section due to a uterine torsion and will have a well-deserved year off from motherhood in 2008.

Guana-Kosteka
2000 metallic bay, Gaigisiz x Akkol, Posman line

Guana is our most exotic broodmare, born in Russia in 2001 and imported in 2004. Her type is outstanding and unmistakeable, she is truly breath-taking, a definite main or racehorse type. A striking head, hooded eye, and delicate, feminine features are set atop a well-balanced and very correct conformation. She is a highly metallic reddish-bay, with a long flowing tail. She is the fastest of the mares, and often races for sheer pleasure in her pasture. Her movement is free and swinging and extremely attractive.

This sensational young mare is the only purebred mare of her Posman bloodline in the US, and is sired by the renowned stallion Gaigisiz (Karaman-Siyagul), whose offspring have won countless World and Russian Championships, important races, and routinely win world sire rankings. Her dam Akkol is a cross of two excellent sport lines, her Arab-line sire Akjol competes through PSG Dressage in Russia, and her dam Ker was a daughter of the excellent Fakirpelvan-line stallion Opal. We are thrilled to have Guana here in the US and we expect outstanding foals from her. We tragically lost her lovely 2006 buckskin colt by Gindarkh to an allergic reaction. She had a gorgeous buckskin colt by Gindarkh in August 2008, who was reserved for Ozalynda Akhal-Tekes of Denmark, in a foal swap for our stallion prospect Rovshen Ozal. Guana is bred back to Gindarkh for a 2009 copy of this lovely boy.

   Dushka II
2001 metallic bay, Arbalet x Darpa, Gelishikli line

We acquired this lovely young mare from the herd of Russian breeder Tito Pontecorvo after admiring her dam for several years. DeeDee is a metallic lineback bay and has outstanding type; very little mane and forelock, a lovely long dry head with a beautiful big eye, and a slim and elegant build. Her movement is superb, straight and free, with a huge flowing trot and well-balanced canter. With grading scores of 8.0 type/8.0 conformation, she was the highest-graded purebred mare born in the US in 2001, and is currently the #3-ranked mare in the country.

Her pedigree is the Golden Cross, Gelishikli-Arab, she reflects that as a medium type mare, a true sporthorse type. Her sire Arbalet, a son of the excellent Amelit (Adat-Lada), was competing successfully at Preliminary Three-Day eventing at the time of his death, and left far too few foals. Her dam Darpa is one of the best producing mares in the US, consistently stamping her type on quality foals. We simply did not have enough room for any more foals next year, as we are concentrating mostly on our older mares, one of which is her dam Darpa, so DeeDee has been leased out for 2008 and will return to us in-foal for 2009, check back for more details.

Magnolia
1988 metallic palomino, Garem 11 x Mancheta, Gelishikli line

Magnolia is one of the best mares to set hoof on US soil, her type is extreme, with an incredibly hooded eye, the sparsest of hair, and an unbelieveably metallic hair coat. Her conformation is excellent, with a beautiful long neck, great balance, and super legs. She also has an outstanding character; calm, dignified, and willing. Her lean elegance is breathtaking, her beauty is stunning. She is the #3-graded mare in the US, with points of 8.0 for type and 8.0 for conformation.

Magnolia is a daughter of the sensational producer Garem, known in Russia as a "super sire". Many of Garem's daughters are the most prized broodmares in Russia. Her dam Mancheta is a daughter of the Toporbai-line stallion Rokot, one of the rarest lines within the breed, she is a perfect medium type mare. Magnolia was imported by and owned for many years by Tito and Natasha Pontecorvo, and has produced some outstanding offspring for them. We hope to be able to coax a few more foals out of her yet.

   Fergan
1987 metallic red bay, Madras x Forgona, El line

Fergan is unique in that she is one of the very few massive type Akhal-Teke mares in the US. Her bone and build are tremendous, yet she still retains the elegance and grace so prized in this breed. She is graded the #2-highest mare in the US, with points of 8.0 for type and 8.5 for conformation, her long graceful neck and flawless leg conformation are especially appreciated. She is reserved yet affectionate, and covers the ground with a smooth elegance and reach.

She is one of the last surviving daughters of the sensational mare Forgona, a daughter of the Ak Sakal line stallion KaraKir. Forgona is possibly one of the best broodmares ever to leave Russia, and left excellent, yet far too few offspring here. Fergan's sire Madras is still fertile and reproducing at 28 years old, which explains why Fergan looks half her age at 20 years young. We are thrilled about her addition to our breeding herd, many thanks go to our friends at Magic Valley Ranch in CO for this incredible opportunity. Fergan had a stunning buckskin colt by Maruk in July 2008 foal, this is a concentrated Ak Sakal line-breeding who is offered for sale as a breeding prospect.

Darpa
1991 metallic bay, Pahlivan x Doigurgush, Arab line

The most-cherished of our herd, we consider this mare to be the epitome of the Akhal-Teke. Incredible type, sensational movement, outstanding conformation, and best of all, the ability to reproduce those qualities in her foals. Graded #2 in the US, with 8.0 type/8.0 conformation, she has produced fillies by two different stallions with the same outstanding grades as herself, and several others with very good points as well. One of her sons is a 4th-Level dressage horse and successful sire, others are in training for endurance. We purchased her 2001 daughter Dushka sight unseen, specifically because she was Darpa’s offspring, before she herself became available to us. While we did not acquire her until her golden years, we hope to be able to have a few foals by her to add to our herd. We have waited a long time for this opportunity.

Darpa’s sire Pahlivan was a grandson of Absent, offering us another chance at linebreeding with those Absent descendents we already have. Her dam Doigurgush was sired by Pervaz, one of the best sons of Polotli, and has been an outstanding producer her entire breeding career as well. We look forward to having her grace our pastures with her superb offspring, she is in foal to Gindarkh for an April 2009 foal.

   Dogoni
2003 metallic sooty buckskin, Gam x Doba, Ak Sakal line

Dogoni was bred by the Pontecorvos of Akhal-Texas and came to us as a young maiden mare, also sight unseen based upon her pedigree. She is a tall, lanky, long-legged beauty, with almond-shaped eyes and a long, elegant neck set atop a beautiful frame. She invariably draws every visitor we have to her first, with her exotic dusky coat and her friendly, curious nature. She is an outstanding mover- free, slinky and long, as all good Tekes should be, and we hope she passes that to her foals as well.

Her sire Gam is by the well-known Mamuk, who has sired numerous competition horses, and is out of the lovely and well-producing Gelekul, one of the few Toporbai-line mares in the US. Gam is competing in endurance rides in California, yet has movement suitable for upper-level dressage. Her dam Doba is a maternal half-sister to our own Darpa and also highly-graded ( 7.8 type, 9.0 conformation), but sired by the excellent Beduin, a son of Dornazarbek, another legendary Russian sire. We will have a few foals from Dogoni and then possibly start her under saddle depending on our schedule. She is in foal to Gindarkh for an April 2009 foal.

Garakali
2002 metallic golden bay, Kopeli x Gora, Karlovach line

Graciously on lease from Silk Road A-T of Raymore, MO, this lovely young mare will be staying with us for a few years. She has a lovely, correct build, huge elegant movement, and her dam’s scant mane and forelock hair, along with her sire’s great work ethic and temperament. She has good bone and a naturally cheerful character, with boundless energy and life. She is a very light, metallic golden bay with lots of eye-catching chrome.

Garakali’s dam Gora is a daughter of the now-deceased Amelit, one of our favorite Gelishikli-line sires, her dam Galateia an outstanding daughter of Dornazarbek. Her sire Kopeli is a half-brother to the Level 7 showjumping stallion Kogan, trained and shown by professional Susie Hutchinson on the A-circuit. Garakali herself is quite athletic and forward, she would make an excellent eventer or foxhunter. We expect her foals to be exceptional sport prospects. She will be bred to the very talented Metman, winner of the 2008 SANA Most Versatile Purebred Akhal-Teke award, in 2009.
